What is Functional medicine?

Functional medicine, simply means, patient-centered approach to chronic disease management and prevention. A function medicine approach looks to optimize health through removing the root cause of illness and supporting the body’s ever-changing needs. This holistic approach takes time. Functional medicine providers spend time listening and gathering information from their patients. Advanced labs are ordered to get a better look at areas for improvement and then a comprehensive treatment plan is individualized to the patients needs. Typical function medicine plans include nutrition, stress-reduction techniques, movement recommendations, removing toxins/allergens, targeted supplementation, and hormone optimization. The goal of of taking a holistic approach is to treat disease and improve quality of life, energy levels, sleep, and longevity.

What is Functional Endocrinology?

The origin of Functional endocrinology can be traced back to 1953 when, N.b. Talbot wrote the book “FUNCTIONAL ENDOCRINOLOGY: From Birth Through Adolescence.” The book discusses, for the first time, combining standard medical care and clinical observation of how the patient feels.

Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine system, which evolves the glands responsible for hormones that control energy, metabolism, growth, sexual function/libido, and circadian rhythm. Using a functional endocrinology approach we can identify issues before they progress into a disease state. This restorative approach is the first step for patients that have been deemed “fine” by standard medical treatment, even though you don’t feel fine.

Low Endocrine function can MANIFEST as the following:

  • Fatigue / Low energy

  • Low mood /anxiety

  • Sexual dysfunction

  • Weight gain

  • Disrupted sleep cycle

  • Dry skin, hair thinning, brittle nails

  • Hot flashes / sweating

  • Feeling cold all the time

  • Acne
